HAWAIIAN GREEN SEA TURTLES

Meet Maui’s beloved honu.

Honu, the Hawaiian green sea turtle, is one of Maui’s most memorable marine residents. Green sea turtles often move gracefully over reefs and seagrass areas and sometimes rest on beaches.

Whether you spot a turtle while snorkeling or from a boat, the best encounter leaves it undisturbed. This field guide explains what to look for and how to watch respectfully.

MEET THE SPECIES

What does a green sea turtle do all day?

Adult green turtles primarily graze on algae and seagrasses, helping connect reef and coastal ecosystems. The common name refers to the color of body fat, not necessarily a green shell.

In Hawaiʻi, green sea turtles sometimes bask on shore. NOAA explains this behavior can help them rest and regulate body temperature. Never mistake a motionless basking turtle for an animal needing to be pushed into the water.

GOOD TO KNOW

Explore respectfully, use approved moorings, and follow marine wildlife protections.

SAFE VIEWING

Give honu their space.

NOAA recommends staying at least ten feet (three meters) from turtles on land and in the water. Keep further away whenever an animal changes its behavior or attempts to leave.

Do not touch, feed, chase or block a turtle’s route to the surface. Avoid crowding turtles at reef-cleaning spots and protect shallow coral habitats.

TURTLE TOWN

A name, not a guarantee.

“Turtle Town” is a commonly used description for an area of South Maui reef habitats, not a promise of a turtle sighting. Your guide to the water should be weather, safe swimming ability and responsible crew behavior—not a wildlife guarantee.

Plan a few reef stops and leave space for a relaxed return. Never enter areas where conditions exceed your group’s ability.
