WHALE WATCH
Whale watching in Maui: what to know before you go.
Winter brings Pacific humpback whales to Hawaiʻi’s waters. Maui is one of the world’s celebrated places to watch these animals from a respectful distance—and your plans should always put the whales and everyone aboard first.
Maui Boat Rentals offers self-operated boats for eligible captains, not a guided whale-watch tour. During whale season, experienced renters may select “Whale watching” as an interest in the trip planner. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed.
WHALE WATCH SEASON
When are humpback whales around Maui?
The Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary describes the general season as November through May, with peak abundance typically January through March. Some animals appear earlier or later.
Use your planned travel month to read the seasonal advice in your complimentary report. A season guide is not a prediction of any particular encounter.
GOOD TO KNOW
Explore respectfully, use approved moorings, and follow marine wildlife protections.
WATCH WITH ALOHA
Give whales the right of way.
Federal rules prohibit approaching humpback whales within 100 yards in Hawaiian waters, including by intercepting their path. Scan ahead, slow down around whales and use binoculars or a zoom lens.
NOAA advises posting an additional dedicated lookout during whale season. Do not chase, surround, pursue or disrupt a whale. If a whale comes close unexpectedly, follow NOAA’s guidance and maneuver conservatively.
WANT A CAPTAINED TOUR?
Understand your choices.
If you are searching for a narrated whale watch with an experienced captain who handles navigation, a licensed guided whale-watch tour is more appropriate than our self-drive rental.
If you are already qualified to operate the boat, you can select the optional whale-watching interest in the planner. This adds observation time, not a guaranteed whale location or predictable fuel mileage.
