PACIFIC HUMPBACK WHALES
Pacific humpback whales in Maui’s waters.
Koholā—humpback whales—make one of the Pacific Ocean’s remarkable seasonal journeys. Many visit Hawaiʻi’s warm waters during the northern winter for breeding, courting and calving.
Their underwater songs and dramatic surface behaviors make them extraordinary animals to observe. Learn what to watch for, the seasonal pattern around Maui and the responsible way to share the ocean.
THE JOURNEY
Why whales come to Hawaiʻi.
North Pacific humpbacks migrate between northern feeding grounds and tropical breeding grounds. Near Maui, people may see spouts, dorsal backs, tail flukes, pectoral fin slaps or—occasionally—a breach.
Whales are not performing for boats. Observers must avoid interfering with their route, resting, nursing or social behaviors.
GOOD TO KNOW
Explore respectfully, use approved moorings, and follow marine wildlife protections.
SEASONAL FIELD NOTES
Listen and look without disturbing.
The Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary reports a general season from November through May, and the usual peak from January through March. Winter whale abundance makes Maui famous for whale watching, but no boat can promise sightings.
Look for a blow from a distance and keep a dedicated lookout aboard. Use binoculars and cameras with zoom rather than moving closer.
PROTECT THE WHALES
The 100-yard rule matters.
Federal humpback rules prohibit deliberately approaching within 100 yards, intercepting a whale, or disrupting its behavior. NOAA also promotes cautious speeds and dedicated vigilance during the season.
Responsible operators protect marine life, guests and the experience future visitors may enjoy. Never enter the water to swim with humpback whales.
WATCH FOR
A misty blow
A surface exhalation can be visible before the whale itself.
LOOK FOR
Tail flukes
The tail may rise as the whale dives.
KEEP DISTANCE
100 yards minimum
A legal no-approach distance in Hawaiian waters.
