MOLOKINI CRATER SNORKELING
Molokini Crater snorkeling: plan it responsibly.
Molokini is the crescent-shaped volcanic islet visible offshore from South Maui. Its protected inner cove is famous for clear-water snorkeling, but it is also a highly regulated Marine Life Conservation District.
If you are an experienced boat operator, a private rental may be an option when weather, navigation conditions, permitted access and mooring availability allow. A quick quote is a planning estimate, never access authorization.
WHAT MAKES IT SPECIAL
A volcanic crescent with living reefs.
Molokini is the exposed rim of an old volcanic crater. The enclosed inner side can offer excellent underwater visibility in favorable conditions, while the outer wall is much more exposed. The islet is also a seabird sanctuary—landing on it is not permitted.
Wind, swell, currents and the availability of lawful moorings may make a trip inappropriate even when it looks close on a tourist map.
GOOD TO KNOW
Explore respectfully, use approved moorings, and follow marine wildlife protections.
PROTECT THE CRATER
Important Molokini rules.
Hawaiʻi DLNR identifies Molokini as a Marine Life Conservation District. Do not take marine life, feed fish, disturb geological material or land on the islet. Anchoring is restricted where the day-use mooring system is established, and access to moorings must follow applicable rules.
Rental crews must confirm current restrictions and whether they may lawfully use available facilities. Fishing and snorkeling should never be combined within a protected zone contrary to regulations.
PLAN YOUR TIME
Pair Molokini with a realistic itinerary.
The quote calculator begins at Kīhei Boat Ramp and can estimate a Molokini trip or a Molokini–Turtle Town combination using 15 mph, 1.5 statute miles per gallon, and 45 minutes at each stop. This is arithmetic for trip planning—not a safe boating course or a guaranteed fuel bill.
Build in margin for wind and changing conditions. If the team advises against the crater, prioritize the safety of your crew and reef.
